2. Stupidity – a useful tradition in the service of democracy
[Translated from MSZ 12/85]
Whenever stupidity is talked about in bourgeois society, it’s to attack the individuals in whom someone wants to have found it. It counts as a defect that can be attested to not only in others, but also in oneself. Modern people convinced of their shrewdness give themselves a lot of credit for knowing exactly under which circumstances they reveal their diagnosis of others or themselves.
This has something to do with the finality of the diagnosis. Someone who is labeled stupid has been written off: he is unfit, either for his own concerns or the services that others expect from him. Arguing with such a person is not worth it, trying to improve through criticism and help is futile – because of the identified defect.
Whether expressed as resigned self-incrimination or as an accusation – the finding of “stupidity” is very radical. It is owed to the view that dimwits lack an ability that the brainy possess. This ability is called intelligence, and the question of its presence or absence is elitist. (…)

Sofern in der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft einmal die Rede von ihr ist, dann geht es gegen die Individuen, an denen sie einer entdeckt haben will. Sie gilt als Defekt, den man anderen, aber auch sich selbst bescheinigen kann. Von ihrer Schläue überzeugte Zeitgenossen halten sich viel darauf zugute, daß sie genau abzuwägen wissen, unter welchen Umständen sie sich und anderen ihre Diagnose offenbaren. Das hat etwas mit der Endgültigkeit der Diagnose zu tun. Wen man der Dummheit zeiht, den hat man abgeschrieben: Er ist untauglich, sei es für seine eigenen Anliegen, sei es für Dienste, die andere von ihm erwarten. Die Auseinandersetzung mit so einem Menschen lohnt nicht, Besserungsversuche durch Kritik bzw. Hilfe müssen scheitern – und zwar wegen des festgestellten Defekts. Ob als resignierende Selbstbezichtigung oder als Vorwurf ausgesprochen – der Befund „Dummheit“ ist ein sehr radikaler. Er verdankt sich der Auffassung, daß es den Dummen an einer Fähigkeit mangeln würde, über die die Gescheiten verfügen. Die Fähigkeit heißt Intelligenz, und die Frage nach ihrem Vorhandensein oder Fehlen ist elitär. (…)
